The Columbia Triathlon Association, Inc. (CTA) respects the privacy rights of our online visitors and recognizes the importance of protecting the information we collect about you. This policy statement describes how we collect information from you on the CTA web site ( and how we use it. The principles of the CTA privacy policy follow Federal Trade Commission rules and are also in accordance with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) Rule.

Purpose of Personal Information Collection

The CTA web site collects personal information from our online visitors on a voluntary basis only. Personal information collected may include your name, your organization, e-mail address, phone number, address, medical information and other specific information about how you found our site and to enable you to register and participate in a CTA event. Providing personal information is not required to access information on this web site. We request personal information only when you do the following things:

  • Register to create a personal profile;
  • Sign up for email updates and newsletters;
  • Submit feedback and comments;
  • Contribute information to be published on the site;
  • Register for an event;
  • Fill out surveys;
  • Make a donation or monetary gift.

Data Collection and Sharing

CTA does not sell personal information about our web site users and/or event participants. CTA may send you information from third parties on offers, products or services that may be of interest to you. Your information will not be shared with these third parties. CTA also publishes lists of individual participants in CTA events, information on their event performance and links to individual event photographs that may be identifiable by any Internet viewer. Users of the CTA site agree to the disclosure of such information. Users of the CTA site also agree to bear all risk associated with the disclosure of such identifiable information and does not hold CTA liable for use of that information by others.

Information about users under the age of 13 will be shared with third party contractors only in situations where the information is needed to participate in a event. CTA makes this information available in a confidential and proprietary manner in accordance with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) Rule from the Federal Trade Commission.

We may disclose user information a) if required to do so by law or b) if we have a good-faith belief that such disclosure is necessary to identify, contact or bring legal action against someone who may be causing interference with or injury to (either intentionally or unintentionally) the CTA rights or property, to other web site users or to anyone else that could be harmed by such activities.

E-mail Newsletters and Event Updates

CTA periodically sends news updates by e-mail to web site users who have provided us with their e-mail addresses through any of the means above. Recipients may choose to unsubscribe to these e-mails at any time. Information about how to unsubscribe is located at the bottom of each e-mail update.

Web Site Log Files

Like most web site administrators, we use log files that record information such as Internet protocol (IP) addresses, browser type, Internet service provider (ISP), referring/exit pages, platform type, date/time stamp and page navigation. We gather this information to track web site visitor movement in the aggregate, in order to understand how web site users are using our service. IP addresses that are recorded do not provide us with personal information about you, and are not linked to personally identifiable information.

Information Security

CTA has established and maintains reasonable security procedures to protect the confidentiality, security and integrity of your personally identifiable information, including the use of secure socket layer (SSL) and encryption methods. We regularly evaluate our data collection, storage and processing practices and security to guard against unauthorized access to our systems. You can help to protect your information by safeguarding your CTA login and password, and using caution and discretion when posting information on public areas of the sites.

If you are using our services to register for an event, program or to purchase a product, CTA shares the personal information you provide to applicable third party(ies) if needed to fulfill your request. This may include medical or personal information during an event, personal information to sanctioning and insurance parties, or financial information for a purchase you request from another vendor. All information about a participant given to any third party will be provided in a confidential manner in accordance with any applicable confidentiality laws including HIPAA privacy and security policies and Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) Rule from the Federal Trade Commission.

CTA also uses secure practices in record retention and disposal. All forms of media (paper or electronic) that contain personal information of CTA Internet users is secured during record retention and disposed of in a secure manner when destroyed.

Login IDs and Passwords

Each User is responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of his or her Login ID and password, and is responsible for all activities that occur under his or her Login ID and password. CTA will not be liable for any Loss whatsoever arising from a User's failure to comply with these security requirements and each User agrees to hold CTA harmless from any and all Losses that arise from that failure to so comply.

Intellectual Property Issues

The Site is owned and copyrighted by CTA. The content featured or displayed on the Site, including, but not limited to, still images, maps, text, pictorial works, video images, still images of video, graphic designs, audio recordings, multimedia combinations, and computer programs, including web-based programs ("Content") is owned by CTA or used with permission of the copyright holder.


The Site and all material and information posted on it is provided to you "as is" without any warranties. You agree that you must evaluate and bear all risks associated with use of the Site, including those risks associated with reliance on the accuracy, thoroughness, or utility of any Content.

The Site may provide, or third parties may provide, links to other sites or resources. Because CTA has no control over such sites and resources, you acknowledge and agree that CTA is not responsible for the availability of such external sites or resources, and does not endorse and is not responsible or liable for any content, advertising, products or other materials on or available from such sites or resources. You further acknowledge and agree that CTA shall not be responsible or liable for any damage or loss caused or alleged to be caused in connection with use of or reliance on any such linked content, goods or services available on or through any such linked site or resource.

User Conduct

All users shall use the Site for lawful purposes only. You agree not to post or transmit through the Site any material that is unlawful, threatening, abusive, defamatory, invasive of privacy or publicity rights, vulgar, obscene, profane, which encourages criminal conduct, or that may give rise to civil liability. You agree not to post or transmit through the site any material or text which constitutes advertising or solicitation with respect to any product or service, unless expressly authorized in writing by CTA to do so.

Your Acceptance of the Privacy Policy

By using this web site, you signify your acceptance of the CTA privacy policy. Changes to this policy may periodically be posted here. Your continued use of the site following the posting of changes to these terms will mean you accept those changes. At any time, a user or parent of a user may delete their own personal profile created on the CTA site if they are not registered for a future event. All user data collected to register for an event must be retained by CTA for the management of said event. The CTA privacy policy was last updated on December 15, 2010.
