Brian Boye, AKA Iron Heart is about to take off..  He has an amazing story. On July 6, 2004, 18-year-old Brian Boyle was driving home from swim practice, when a dump truck speeding through an intersection T-boned the car he was driving. The former swimmer and bodybuilder suffered massive internal injuries, losing 60 per cent of his blood. His heart was actually knocked to the other side of his chest. To manage the severe trauma, medical staff had to put him in a chemical-induced coma which lasted two months.

Doctors predicted that if Boyle survived he would be in a vegetative state. And they said that if he did manage to regain consciousness and use of his mental faculties, he would likely have to live out his life under full-time nursing care.

Boyle aka "Iron Heart" has proved those doctors wrong. He fought his way back and not only recovered, but just 30 months later, he competed in the Ironman World Championship in Kona, finishing the race in just 14 hours, 42 minutes. He is returning today to the Columbia Triathlon and will be at next month’s TriColumbia Ironman 70.3 EagleMan.

May 22, 2011 7:48 am

Also competing today is Hunter Lussi, who completed his first triathlon at the age of six. At 13, Hunter became the youngest person to complete an ultra distance triathlon (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, 26.2 mile run). He has written two books, America, Get Off the Couch! and A Healthy America is One Bite Away, launched his own fitness program, America's Tri for Health, and is a familiar face on Capitol Hill as an advocate in the fight against childhood obesity. Now, at 17, the Maryland native is lending his voice to the Maryland Youth Triathlon Series, helping to spread the Joanna M. Nicolay Melanoma Foundation's sun-safe message and encourage healthy lifestyle choices through multisport. Hunter will be making appearances at all four Maryland Youth Triathlon Series events, including TriColumbia’s Kidz Triathlon on July 24th, and all children participating will receive a signed copy of Hunter’s book, America, Get Off the Couch!

Diane Sharp, is here. She is a 58 year old, internationally competitive triathlete from Asheville, who battled the grief of her husband's death from pancreatic cancer just as she fought her own bout with lung cancer - by refusing to stop moving.
Despite having been a lifelong athlete and despite never having been a smoker, Sharp was diagnosed with lung cancer in December 2006. She was told she had six months to live.
After her husbands death earlier this year, Sharp honors him by competing to raise money in his memory,  She hopes to compete in the national USA Triathlon in 2011.
