Once again we thank the hundreds of individual volunteers, and community organizations that have helped to make this event so spectacular, and to keep over 2000 women safe and supported before, during and after the race.  Thanks as well to Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks, Howard County Department of Police, Fire and Rescue, Howard County Explorers, and Howard County General Hospital.

Robin Yoder, Paratriathlete, just crossed the finish line; an amazing sight.  Robin showed grit and determination as she is just now marking her 1 year anniversary as an amputee from bone cancer.  Congratulations to Robin - celebrating life with us today!!!1

There are appproximately 20 individual athletes and relay team members racing here today in memory of Mark Hollingsworth who died last year of lung cancer.

Jamie Roehder with Team ASA is a great athlete - She has a HUGE fear of the water and is a Mom of 3.  She lost her father in a drowning accident and step father in a motorcycle accident.  So she is swimming for her dad, biking for her step-dad and running for herself!  At the practice swim, Jamie came out of the water bawling and Vigo took her in his arms - it was a site to see!!!

Tracy Broccolino of Team Conquer is racing today her mom, sister and 7 cousins - all who have fought breast cancer, as well as for Christine Anthony. Christine was the mom of Tracy's two newly adopted girls, D'Zire & Shani, who lost her battle in February of this year.

Mitzi Sinnott, competing here today, is the daughter of a Vietnam Veteran and member of a military family who has endured a series of hardships including homelessness and PTSD; She is sponsored by Women Veterans Rock and The Healthy Caregiver Foundation which work to address social and health issues affecting women veterans including homelessness and PTSD.

Our relay teams are in the water.  Among them is a group of cancer warriors from Team Inspiration. The team includes Jennifer Masters, biker is breast cancer survivor and Jessica Hensley, runner who was diagnosed with Leukemia and is currently receiving chemo therapy. She designed Team Inspirations logo too!

Welcome to Team Conquer raising funds and awareness for the Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource Center, providing support to those living and coping with cancer.  Leslie Rogers, Director of the center is here today competing on a realy team in support of the center, as is Anita Broccolino and Tracy Broccolino.  Anita is a 10 year Lymphoma survivor and is running for her Aunt Donna Broccolino who lost a 4 year battle with brain cancer, and for her friend Janine Heiner who was just diagnosed a few weeks ago and about to have a full mastectomy... all with no job and no health insurance.  Anita founded Team Conquer.

Lots of new moms are here today, including Stephanie Blades who is racing for ASA and Teacher2Runner2Mother, and Mandy Williams who just gave birth approximately 7 weeks ago! What an inspiration you are to Mothers everywhere!

34 year old, Jennifer Holland of Pasadena is competing today. Jennifer donated a kidney to her mother last May, saving her life!  Jennifer is racing with Team ASA!

Amy Thompson is racing for Team ASA. She is competing in first triathlon for her 8 year old son, Jake, who is  disabled; Amy wants to honor her son and other children who are constrained by their own physical limitations, but whose love for movement and athletics knows no bounds!   It is Jake's birthday today!

Next wave to go off is the women age 45 - 49 including Karen Nitkin.  Karen is participating for the second time, Karen was diagnosed with Stage II Breast Cancer in October and underwent radiation treatment just one month ago. Welcome, Karen and good luck to you!

Just off are the women 40 - 44.  Jennifer Ransaw Smith age 42.  Like many others here today, Jennifer is a mother of 3 who just had her 3rd child at the age of 40.  She juggles husband, home, kids and job, and is so happy to be here today competing in her first triathlon at The Athleta Iron Girl Columbia!

Next are the 50-54 year olds in lilac swim caps. Robin Gault is about to take off. Robin was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2002; underwent a mastectomy and is now cancer free! She was in the pool 10 days after surgery and is poised to be an Iron Girl today!  Also Debi Vreeland is in this wave. Debi has lost 117 pounds. This is her very first triathlon!

The Athleta Award of Inspiration is being presented to Robin Yoder, paratriathlete, who lost her leg just one year ago due to cancer.  49 year old, Robin, was a triathlete prior to her amputation and has focused on her recovery afterward as she struggled and trained to get to this, her first post amputation triathlon.  Congratulations to Robin, an amazing athlete and an inspiration to all women! Robin is assisted by her husband and son here today. Good luck to you, Robin and thank you for being here today!

As a non-profit 501(c)(3), TriColumbia gives back to our community by supporting many local and regional charities, which provide a full spectrum of support for citizens in need.  TriColumbia donates both in direct contributions as well as by providing fundraising team racing opportunities for charities.

There are many charity teams here today raising money for worthy causes - Team in Training (Leukemia Lymphoma Society), Team Embrace (The Arc of Howard County), Team Fight (Ulman Cancer Fund), Team ASA (Athletes Serving Athletes), Team Inspiration, Team Conquer (both supporting those dealing with cancer), Team Circle (Womens Giving Circle), Team WIN-THE-FIGHT (Joanna M Nicolay Melanoma Foundation), Winter Growth (supporting the Elderly), Team Colleen & Erin (scholarship fund named for sisters killed in a torando), Team Broderick (Lung Cancer).  Welcome to all the women racing to support these worthy causes!

Good Morning - It's a beautiful morning for the 6th Annual Iron Girl Columbia Triathlon here in Columbia, MD.  The lake is like glass, the air is cool and comfortable and excitement is in the air as over 2000 women are anticipating the culmination of their journey toward the Finish Line!  Each woman has a unique story, participating to reach personal goals and to express their unique "grace."
