BethAnn Telford is competing today in the Half.  She is spokesperson for the GET YOUR HEAD IN THE GAME® Brain Tumor Awareness Movement, a part of the National Brain Tumor Society; Since her diagnosis 6 years ago with a brain tumor she has dedicated her life to raising awareness and research funds.  Since her disease, she has been determined to do things and not put them off. She has completed the Boston Marathon, the Eagleman 70.3 several times and the Ford Lake Placid Ironman Triathlon – twice.  GO BETHANN!

Ayanna Bailey, mother of two, She has overcome many life obstacles without giving up and now has decided to no longer be a quitter when it comes to running.  She is running to show her daughters that she is an “irongirl” and that there are “irongirls” inside of them too!

When I feel myself getting discouraged and frustrated, I simply think of her and all that she has endured and also think of the amazing person who made the decision to donate life so that my aunt could have a second chance at life." ~ Jen

Allison is running "Just to see if I could do it! After major knee surgery years ago and a screw holding my patella tendon in place, I didn't think I would run a mile ever again, let alone 13.1!! I have enjoyed every minute of the training journey with my running buddy Jaime Piper Fontanazza and I can't wait to cross the finish line with her!!" ~ Allison

Helen is running "Because I just turned 40, not too late to start, right? Plus after plasma therapy treatment to heal torn ligaments, fractures and plantar fasciitis I needed to show myself I could do it and I want my girls how strong a woman can be. Titanium, baby."

Amy is running because "I made a promise to myself that I would lead a healthy lifestyle, not only for myself, but for my girls. So that they have an active mommy who they can look up to. When I run, I often think of the family health history I am running away from. A cycle that I do not want to repeat... The Iron Girl is the perfect symbol to add to my running journey. As I run on Sunday, I will hear my little girls voices saying "Go, Mommy Go!" and that will keep me moving toward the finish line."

Leah is running to "prove to myself that I can do anything I set my mind to. I'm running in honor of my grandmother who was just diagnosed with breast cancer a few weeks ago. Her strength is my strength and if she can get through surgery, I sure can get through 13.1 miles with a smile on my face because life is too short!"

There is Iron Girl Inspiration all around today...

Competing today is April Orr whi is a mlitary wife and a mother of 3 daughters;  She trains to teach her children that no matter where life takes you, or the struggles you face you can always decide to put one foot in front of the other and push on.  She believes running teaches a great life lesson that no matter where the wall is you can push through it if you choose to.

Everyone loves chocolate!  1/2 Marathoners get a bit of a boost from premium dark chocolate at the 8 mile aid station.  We hope it helps their race times!

Congratulations today to Yvonne Carteer, who pursued a career as a cardiothoracic surgeon after her mother sufferd a heart attack at age 37 when he was in the third grade.  She has been running for years, as a way to stay fit and as a part of heart attack prevention.  She has run in both the NYC and Boston Marathon. Go Yvonne!

Wegmans, new to the Columbia are here providing the great post race food.  There is a group of 50 employees running in the 5K and they are stoked!  At the start line now doing a group cheer.  Wendy, store manager, is welcoming all athletes and spectators and invites them to the store opening on June 17th.

Also competing today, with the assistance of Athletes Serving Athletes (ASA) are challenged athletes, Teona and Janae. Both student athletes are from the William S. Baer School in Baltimore City. This will be Janae’s 2nd half marathon, and Teaonia’s 1st. They are being assisted by ASA WingWomen,  Melinda Peters, Katye McNulty ,Emily Augustus, Joselin Martin,Jen Ungerland, Meghan with ASA, Nancy Papa-Doran, Pilar Chissell, Nancy Papa-Doran, Diana Desierto (Relay Team ASA - Team Janae)

Good Morning and welcome to the Inaugural running of the Athleta Iron Girl Columbia Half Marathon & Coed 5k to benefit the Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource Center where the air is filled with excitement and you can feel the inspiration in the air.  Many women are racing in memory of or tribute to loved ones.  Others are racing for a charitable cause or to be a better role model for their children.
